Dr. Sunil Singh and Professor Muthukumar have investigated the coupled movement of a polyelectrolyte chain and its counterions, which are under confinement inside a nanopore and an external electric field. Their simulations show the frequent occurrence of the counterions moving towards the wrong electrode, due to them being carried by the polymer.
